A partner at Richards Rodriguez & Skeith since early 2021 and a native of Austin, Albert Carrion is RRS’ inaugural Featured Attorney of the Quarter! Albert has quickly become an integral part of the RRS team through his interdisciplinary skills and wealth of legal experience. Albert’s fields of expertise include intellectual property, business transactions, technology licensing, and trademark law, among others. We recently spoke to him about his experiences, what drives him, and what he loves about practicing in Austin.
An Early Love of the Law
Albert’s interest in the legal landscape began as far back as high school and he credits a civics teacher as his inspiration. As Albert says, “I took a government class in high school taught by a fantastic teacher. We studied several U.S. Supreme Court cases and the impact they had on society. I was hooked.”
This interest in legal concepts carried Albert into college, where he graduated with honors from the University of Texas with a B.A. in Government. He then continued at UT with his post-graduate studies, earning his J.D. at the UT School of Law. He met his future wife during his schooling at UT and they eventually had a son who also went on to graduate from UT.
Albert is a fierce proponent of effective education and has never forgotten the teacher who piqued his interest in the law. He previously sat on the Board of Regents of Concordia University Texas for nine years and was Chair for three years. Albert is currently a board member for Leadership Austin and also serves on the Blueprint Leadership Council for E3 Alliance.
Where Teaching and Technology Meet
This continuing interest in education led to intellectual property law becoming one of Albert’s primary areas of focus. “Innovative people amaze me. I love helping new or small clients introduce their technology to much larger companies and then watching the client grow and maintain long-term business relationships.”
Albert prides himself on being an active listener and uses this skill to strategically guide clients who are looking to protect their technological creations and advancements, as well as assisting them with agreements, partnerships, mergers, and more. His counsel is particularly valued among health care providers and centers of higher education when negotiating the licensing of enterprise tech contracts for systems such as electronic health record storage, online program management, and IT solutions.
Serving the Place He Calls Home
Above all, Albert takes pride in helping the community that he has been a member of all his life. “I love being able to consider the individual circumstances of every case so I can recommend the best approach to the problem,” Albert says. “I really value being the “first call” that my clients make to solve a problem, even if I can’t help them personally.”
This interest in doing his part to nurture local economic empowerment among businesses big and small also led to a stint on the Board of Directors of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, where Albert served for over four years. His family currently lives in Austin, are big fans of Longhorn sports, local music, and traveling. Albert is an avid runner and cyclist and can often be found hiking on the trails surrounding Lady Bird Lake or bicycling around the Austin area.
Congratulations on being named our Featured Attorney of the Quarter, Albert, and thanks for all you do!
